Match of the day: South Africa – Poland (31st May)
When the Referee blew his whistle for a penalty, a lot of spectators wondered why the Goalkeeper Thambolinye Mzaneli ran up the pitch to the box of the opponent. But when Mzaneli scored easily to bring her team up 1:0 no one was wondering anymore. But at the end it was not enough for the team from Durban on the first day of One Nation Cup 2016. Against well organized Polish girls the score at the end was 2:2.
A result, which is surely okay for the Girls from Danzig, because South Africa was the better team throughout the match. Although they were physically inferior, they dominated the midfield and used their fast wingers to create chances. Poland stood well defensively and were clinically up front. Paulina Mattik scored a beauty from outside the box which the penalty-taker Mzaneli could not save.
After South Africa took the lead once again it was Julia Utodarcyk that put both teams level. After that the Girls from eastern Europe defended well and concentrated on counter attacks. Until the final whistle in the first match of group D the score remained 2:2 because both teams failed to hit the final punsh.
